West Indies Fly Outfitters was born out of Capt. Fernando’s passion for fly fishing. It all started when he picked up a fly rod and discovered the unique challenge of combining finesse with power while fishing for tarpon. The thrill of fishing had faded over time, a common experience for those lucky enough to grow up with such a rich fishery like Puerto Rico’s tarpon waters right in their backyard. But when he picked up a fly rod, everything changed—rekindling the excitement and passion he had felt as a child.. It was frustrating, time-consuming, but ultimately rewarding—and it deepened his respect and admiration for the sport.

There was something both frustrating and exhilarating about the sport, something that made it endlessly captivating and worth every moment spent learning. And it wasn’t just about catching fish—it was about understanding the rhythm of the water and the dance with nature. But Capt. Fernando wasn’t alone in this journey. He looked up to those who had mastered the craft before him, especially his mentor, Capt. Tommy Fleming, whose skill and seemingly effortless ability to outwit fish left Fernando in awe.

This experience, and the wisdom passed down from seasoned guides who’ve dedicated their lives to this beautiful island fishery, led to the creation of West Indies Fly Outfitters. It’s more than just a business—it’s a celebration of the rich tradition and respect for the waters of Puerto Rico. Our goal is to honor the legacy of those who came before us, while sharing the island’s incredible fishing opportunities with those who truly appreciate its magic.
